The Oscar nominations are out, and as for fashionistas it seems to be a case of the sophisticate and the ingenue – with Keira Knightley somewhere in the middle.

Cate Blanchett is nominated for best actress in a leading role for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and also for best actress in a supporting role for I’m Not There. This is Blanchett’s fourth nomination, and she won once before in 2005 for her supporting role in The Aviator - as seen above.

This is Ellen Page’s first nomination, for best actress in a leading role for breakout hit Juno. It will be really fun to see what Page wears for her first Oscars. For most red carpet events so far, Page has stuck to short, cocktail type frocks, but this will be an occasion to amp up the glamour.

While Keira Knightley herself isn’t nominated, her film Atonement is up for Best Picture. Nominated once before for Pride and Prejudice, we bet Knightley is really waiting for her Oscar ship to come in. But her Oscar dress ship came in long ago, at the 2006 Oscars when she wore the one shouldered Vera Wang gown.

Will one of them go for Versace? Donatella Versace forewent a runway show in Paris this week, sending 15 couture dresses to Paris to be seen by appointment only before they went on to L.A. for prospective wear at the Academy Awards according to WWD.

Everything depends, of course, on the Screen Writer’s Guild allowing the awards show to go on, or coming to an agreement with the studios. There’s buzz that the guild doesn’t want to get in the way of such an important institution, but who knows since they did cancel the Golden Globes.
